OUR MISSION
To help family foundations strengthen leadership and governance by connecting them with mission-aligned experts whose lived and professional experience expands institutional intelligence, builds trust, and improves decision-making.
OUR VISION
We envision a future where philanthropic institutions are guided by pluralistic leadership — where lived experience, professional expertise, and community knowledge inform how decisions are made and how resources are invested, making philanthropy more informed, more relevant, and more effective.
Our Core
Values
Pluralism
We believe institutions make better decisions when they draw on multiple forms of expertise, experience, and perspective.
Proximity as Expertise
We believe lived experience and community knowledge are forms of expertise that strengthen leadership, governance, and institutional decision-making.
Stewardship
We believe foundations are stewards of both legacy and future impact, and leadership must honor both while preparing institutions for a changing world.
Field Building
We believe lasting change requires strengthening the field of philanthropy — building leadership pathways, governance models, and networks that help institutions evolve over time.
Why This Work Exists
Philanthropy is a decision-making system. Who makes decisions and what knowledge informs those decisions shapes impact. Future Funders exists to help foundations strengthen leadership and governance so they can make better decisions and remain effective in a complex, changing world.
Why Family Foundations
Family foundations have long time horizons and unique governance structures that create opportunities for leadership transition and institutional evolution. We work with family foundations because these transition moments create opportunities to strengthen leadership, governance, and decision-making for the future.
Our Role in the Field
Future Funders is a field-building initiative that helps proximate leaders access executive and trustee roles, supports foundations through leadership transitions, and works across the sector to strengthen leadership and governance in philanthropy.
